How to remove a .git from a directory

On command line:

Check is a directory has a .git: $git status

Show all the files: $ls -a

Remove the .git file: $ rm .git

If there is an error that says git is a direction then use: $rm -rf .git

P.S. The -rf is called a recursive function  but I have no idea what that is, will explain once I find out.
